These "smart meters" were offered to us in Colorado. The utility company gushed about it. To coerce its use, they charged people opting out of it extra each month.
We opted out.
A month later, Colorado made national news when customers found that their thermostats didn't respond to settings set by owners.
We at least had a choice at the time and paid for it. In the future, that may not be an option.
