Re @GavinNewsom Stop politicizing a tragedy

California's top *forest* scientists say main causes of fires are

- 5x more wood fuel in forests due to 100+ years of fire suppression

- Drought (2012-16) that would have occurred w/o climate change

Mike Shellenberger: “Climate dries the [wood] fuels out & extends the fire season BUT IT'S NOT THE CAUSE OF THE INTENSITY of the fires. The cause of that is fire suppression and the existing debt of wood fuel.”

— Malcolm North, US Forest Service

@mahakal @tony__heller Unfortunately that's a bot you're talking to, of his Twitter feed

@mahakal @tony__heller anything external anyone here follows shows up on the federated timeline. Local will only get stuff we’ve specifically reposted. Of course you can block or mute them.

@arzachel @tony__heller If someone is federated, I would assume that means they see replies on some other site, if not this one. As long as I'm reading and replying to a person I shouldn't have to care where they are, but if they can't see my replies that's less something I want to subscribe to.

@mahakal @tony__heller understood, and this is because I follow bots of Twitter accounts as a convenience measure. Options again are block, mute, overpower me & have me unfollow them, or stick to the local timeline.

@arzachel @tony__heller So this is basically a personal wall. I'm just trying to figure out how it works. If I reply to someone here then it's a reply to you.

@arzachel @tony__heller If I want my own personal wall, I should bring up my own Mastodon instance and federate it, then?

@mahakal @tony__heller there is a personal feed option I mentioned along with the public feed & federated feed. But yeah, if you want to be admin, you should simply spin up your own instance. Would it help if I, uh, unfollowed the bots?

@mahakal @tony__heller also, last sentence is incorrect. Can I point you to some docs or whatnot?

@arzachel @tony__heller So there's one Home feed which is whatever you subscribe to plus the Local feed which is whatever anyone posts here, are there any sorts of groups like the old days of echomail or anything? Trying to evaluate the usability of this platform.

@arzachel @tony__heller Also there is a Federated timeline which appears to be the Home feed plus some other feeds?
